When Dave Marcus, VP of Messaging Products at Facebook, gave his keynote at f8 on April 12th, he noted that Messenger was the second most app used in the world on iOS, just behind Facebook. With that context, Dave announced the (beta) launch of the Messenger Platform, enabling anyone or any business to build bots for Messenger using Facebook’s brand new Send/Receive API that provides a hybrid of conversational elements (e.g. texts, images....) and UI (e.g. buttons, calls to action…). Dave also discussed M, Facebook’s early stage digital assistant that learns through a combination of AI and human trainers. M is now open for everyone to use to build more complex self learning bots. The list of Messenger Platform partners was impressive:
While there’s no doubt that bots are having a moment, they’ve been around since the beginning of the Internet, in 1993, when Eggdrop was developed to moderate Internet Relay Chat. The reason for all the new interest is the belief that the emergence of the cloud, big data, machine learning, and AI, will enable a rapid increase in the functionality of bots. That said, early reviews for Messenger bots indicate it’s off to a rocky start. Which is better than the experience of Microsoft’s AI Twitter bot “Tay”, which learned to be a racist in less than 24 hours.
So what does 2016 hold for the world of bots? Will we see massive consumer adoption or is there more hype than substance? What are the potential killer apps for bots? What industries are most ripe for disruption from bots? These questions and more will be addressed by our panel of AI/bot thought leaders:
