There’s a Cambrian explosion of DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) happening, lead by the super simple MolochDAO and the dozens of forks that followed (e.g. MetaCartel) . The DAOstack and Aragon ecosystems are also growing rapidly, as are DeFi related DAOs.
Given the accelerating activity in DAOs, in partnership with DAOfest, we’re hosting 4 thought leaders, each coming at DAOs from a different perspective. Our experts will present their views on the current state & future direction of DAOs. They’ll discuss what’s working, the challenges, lessons learned, and the outlook for DAOs in 2020 and beyond.

Our featured speakers include:
Aaron Wright — Co-Founder of OpenLaw, the team building The LAO the 1st for-profit limited liability autonomous organization. The LAO is a member-directed VC fund organized in the U.S., with an aim to be compliant with U.S. law. The LAO Members pool capital, invest in projects, and share in proceeds. The LAO is organized a Delaware LLC, primarily administered via a DApp and smart contracts. The LAO enables members to vote on funding proposals and invest in early-stage Ethereum ventures. Aaron is also a Professor of Law at Cardozo Law, where his research focuses on smart contracts, decentralized organizations, and the regulation of autonomous code-based systems. He is co-author of the book Blockchain & the Law: The Rule of Code and Aaron played a small role in launch the Ethereum Foundation.
Matan Field — Lead architect and CEO of DAOstack, a comprehensive toolkit for decentralized collaboration at scale. Built on an open, modular and upgradable architecture, the DAO stack includes the governance and economic framework needed for collectives to self-organize around shared goals and interests. Matan began his career as a PhD theoretical physicist at the Weizmann Institute, researching fundamental physics and String Theory. For two decades, Matan has been curious about alternative economic and organizational models. During his postdoctoral research at the Technion, he discovered the blockchain and founded La’Zooz, a decentralized ride-sharing network. He then co-founded Backfeed to develop a basis for decentralized governance and decentralized organizations. DAOstack builds on the vision and concept of Backfeed while expanding to become an all-purpose governance framework as well as include an application/interface layer.
James Waugh — MetaCartel, a fork of the MolochDAO, is a a distributed organization focused on funding and incubating early stage DApp experimentation around new native web 3.0 use cases and business models. MetaCartel has made more than a dozen grants to date to DApps including , DeFiZap, DAOHaus, and Sablier. In addition to MetaCartel, James founded Axia Labs to provide top down advice that helps leaders & innovators connect more impactfully with the tokenization & blockchain space.
