There was a lot of hype surrounding Bakkt’s recent launch of their bitcoin futures product and the impact it would have on institutional interest in, and the price of, bitcoin. Based on early volume, or the lack thereof, the hype was largely unwarranted.
But why are the volumes so weak for Bakkt? Why is institutional interest in bitcoin still so low? Is it the lack of infrastructure to trade and custody? Is it the volatility? Is it the uncertain regularity environment? Is it that as an asset class, it’s still so small in size, that if institutions wanted to get involved, it could take them years. And, importantly, is institutional interest even needed for bitcoin to reach new highs?
These questions and more will be answered by our esteemed panelists who are each looking at this issue from different perspectives. We’ll leave plenty of time at the end of the presentations for questions form the audience.
